Do you want to know how to find out who is behind a fake TikTok account? We hear this all too often, and our social media investigation team wants to help. 

Creating a convincing fake TikTok account has become easier than ever. With a fake name, an AI-generated profile picture and very little genuine personal information, someone can create an online persona that gives away almost nothing about who they really are.

In a previous blog, we looked at how to identify who is behind fake Facebook accounts. In this guide, we will turn our attention to TikTok and show you some of the things you can check yourself when trying to uncover who may be behind a fake account.

When you picture the person behind an anonymous TikTok account, it can be easy to make assumptions based on the type of content they post, the way they write or even the age they appear to be.

But the person behind the screen may be very different from the identity they present online.

TikTok is used all over the world, and as the platform continues to grow, so does the range of people using it. It is no longer a platform used predominantly by teenagers and younger users. Its audience has become much broader over the years, with recent statistics showing that 38% of TikTok users are now aged 30 and above. This is important to keep in mind when trying to work out who may be behind an anonymous account.

From our experience investigating fake and anonymous social media accounts, the person responsible does not necessarily have to be within your age group or fit the type of person you would normally associate with TikTok. Someone can easily present themselves as younger, use a fake profile picture, change the way they communicate or create an entirely fictional online identity.

And with AI-generated images, videos and other content now readily available, it has become even easier to create a convincing persona that bears very little resemblance to the person actually operating the account.

The unfortunate truth is that almost anyone could be behind an anonymous TikTok account. In previous investigations, we have uncovered people behind anonymous harassment who were very different from who the victim initially suspected.

With almost 2 billion users, how many of those users are fake accounts that are seeking to harass, intimidate, or bully? While we can’t say for certain how many fake accounts exist among those 2 billion users, in the fourth quarter of 2025 alone, approximately 146.3 million fake accounts were removed from TikTok.

So while we cannot say how many fake accounts are currently active, one thing is clear…the figures show just how widespread they are on TikTok.

There are, of course, fake accounts on every social media platform, but what makes TikTok different? Creating a new TikTok account does not require serious layers of verification. It’s actually quite easy. TikTok’s main page can also push content to users quickly, even if they do not already follow the account.

As TikTok is still a relatively new platform compared to, say, Facebook, our investigators are constantly learning and discovering new ways to identify who may be behind a fake account.

These accounts are created to look as though they belong to a celebrity, influencer or other well-known public figure. They may use the person’s name, photos and videos, copy content from their genuine account or use AI-generated material to make the profile appear more convincing.

The goal is often to gain the victim’s trust before asking for money or personal information, directing them to another platform or promoting a fake investment or other scam.

Many fake celebrity accounts have red flags that can be spotted if you know what to look for. The username may be slightly different from the genuine account, the account may have been recently created, or the person may unexpectedly contact followers through private messages.

However, there are times that these red flags can be overlooked, particularly when the celebrity being impersonated is someone the victim already admires or trusts. After all, an unexpected message from someone you admire can be exciting or surprising, and in that moment, some of the usual warning signs may not immediately stand out.

So, where do you start? Our investigators have put together six practical tips that can help you uncover more information about a fake TikTok account and the person who may be behind it. You can also watch the video below as we walk you through some of these techniques.

1. View TikTok Profiles Privately

While this does allow you to browse privately,  it also disables your ability to see who has viewed your own profile.

2. Search the Username

The username of a fake or harassing TikTok account can sometimes provide valuable clues about who may be behind it. People often reuse the same username, or slight variations of it, across different social media platforms.

If you already have a suspect in mind, take a look at the usernames they use on their legitimate accounts and compare them with the fake TikTok profile. Look for similarities such as the same words, numbers, initials, nicknames or other patterns that could indicate a connection.

You can also try searching the TikTok username on Google. It may bring up another social media account, an old account, a forum post or somewhere else online where the same username has been used. You never know what might come up, and even an old or forgotten account could provide another clue about the person behind the profile.

Just remember that a matching or similar username does not prove that two accounts belong to the same person. Treat it as a lead and look for other information that supports the connection.

3. Check When the Account Was Created

Unlike Facebook, TikTok does not currently display an account’s creation date directly on the account, either through the app or on desktop. However, there are third-party tools that may help you find this information.

服务如 评论选择器 allow you to search a TikTok username and retrieve information associated with the account. From this search, you will receive information such as the user ID, account creation date, and the date the username was last changed.

The timing can be useful when investigating a fake account. For example, if the account was created shortly after a breakup, workplace dispute or another incident involving you, that timing may provide a useful clue about why the account was created and who could be behind it.

4. Check Their Reposts and Following

An account’s reposts and the people it follows can tell you more than you might expect. Take some time to look through the videos they have reposted and pay attention to recurring themes, humour, interests, opinions or topics that seem particularly relevant to them.

If you suspect the person behind the account is someone you know, consider whether any of the reposted content matches their known interests or sense of humour. You might also notice references to particular places, hobbies, industries or communities that could help narrow things down.

The accounts they follow can be just as useful. Look for patterns in the types of creators, businesses, local pages or communities they follow.

In one of our TikTok investigations, we found that a large proportion of the account’s reposted content appeared to relate to a particular demographic. When we looked at this alongside the types of accounts the user was following, it helped us narrow down the likely age group of the person behind the profile.

5. Analyse Their Language and Writing Style 

The way someone writes can reveal useful clues about who may be behind an anonymous account. Pay attention to repeated words and phrases, spelling, slang, punctuation, emojis and even the way they structure their sentences.

If you already have someone in mind, compare the language used by the fake account with the way that person communicates online. They may use a particular phrase frequently, make the same spelling mistakes or have other writing habits that appear across both accounts.

You can also look at the language more broadly. Certain slang, expressions or references may provide clues about the person’s age group, location or community.

6. Reverse Search Their Profile Picture

If the anonymous TikTok account uses a profile picture, try searching the image to see whether it appears anywhere else online. This is known as a reverse image search.

诸如 TinEye, or even a simple Google image search, allow you to upload an image and search for other places where the same or similar image has appeared online. This may help you find the original source of the image, another account using it or establish that the profile picture has simply been taken from somewhere else.

Of course, you can report the fake account to TikTok, and it may get removed. But this is generally a band-aid fix, and the harasser simply makes a new account and the harassment continues.
